How to Audit Your SEO Company in an Afternoon

A straightforward checklist to find out whether your SEO company is actually doing anything for you.

You don't need to be an expert to tell if your SEO company is working. Run through this checklist and you'll know.

Check if you actually rank

Search your main services plus your city in an incognito window. If you're not on page one for the work that matters, ask your company why — and listen carefully to the answer.

Look at your Google Business Profile

Is it complete, active, and posting? Are there recent photos and a growing review count? A neglected profile is a sign of neglected work.

Ask for a list of what they've changed

A working SEO company can show you specific changes — pages added, fixes made, content published. 'We're optimizing' is not an answer.

Test your site speed

Run your site through a free speed test. If it's slow on mobile and your SEO company never mentioned it, they're missing the basics.

Count your indexed pages

Search your domain on Google. If a service-area business has only a handful of pages indexed, you're not covering the searches you should be.

Review the reports you're getting

Do they show calls and leads, or just impressions and rankings for keywords nobody searches? Demand metrics that tie to revenue.

Verify the content is yours and unique

Spun, duplicated, or AI-slop content can hurt you. Spot-check that your pages read like a real business wrote them.

Ask where your leads are coming from

A good company knows. If they can't tell you which leads their work produced, they can't prove they're worth paying.
